(Boston—Jan. 23, 2012) The Maine Wastewater Control Association (MWWCA) was recently honored with the "2011 Regional State Wastewater Association Excellence Award" by EPA.

The MWWCA was highly recommended by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection for all of the outstanding work the MWWCA has done over the years through the collaborative efforts of all of its members.   The EPA Regional Wastewater Excellence Awards Program recognizes municipal personnel in the wastewater field who have provided invaluable public service operating wastewater treatment facilities throughout New England.   In addition, EPA recognizes those groups and entities promoting and advocating for the municipal wastewater profession, such as the MWWCA, to further protect water quality and public health.

The MWWCA is an association of over 650 members consisting of municipal and industrial wastewater treatment operators, consultants, students, and regulatory officials.  It represents over 95 wastewater treatment plants serving over 125 communities throughout the state of Maine.  The mission of the MWWCA is to promote professional environmental management practices to protect and improve the waters and related environments of the State of Maine.  MWCCA promotes training opportunities for wastewater treatment professionals; promotes educational opportunities for the public regarding environmental issues; and promotes public awareness programs to enhance the image of wastewater treatment professionals.

Jeff McBurnie is the 2012 MWWCA President and Paul Rodriguez is the most recent past MWWCA president.

“The professionals managing and operating wastewater treatment plants play a crucial role in ensuring that our lakes and rivers are protected from unnecessary pollution,” said Curt Spalding, regional administrator for EPA's New England Office.  "I am proud to acknowledge the MWWCA for all of their outstanding member contributions and collaborative efforts to help protect public health and water quality.

The MWWCA will be acknowledged for their exceptional work on January 25th at the annual New England Water Environment Association Conference in Boston.
