Release Date: 8/8/1995
Contact Information: Lois Grunwald, U.S. EPA,, (415) 744-1588

(San Francisco)--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) today announced a proposed plan for cleaning up soil contamination at the Industrial Waste Processing Superfund Site, Fresno, Calif.

The public is invited to attend a community meeting and provide comments on the proposal. The meeting will be held August
17, 1995 at 7:00 p.m. at the Northwest Church 5415 North West Avenue, Fresno.

"After careful and thorough investigation of the environmental problems at this site and an evaluation of various cleanup options, U.S. EPA is proposing to remove the contaminated soils at the Industrial Waste Processing Superfund site," said Keith Takata, U.S. EPA's deputy director of Superfund Programs. "This comment period allows the community an opportunity to actively participate in the decision-making process."

The soils are primarily contaminated with lead, with one localized area of solvent contamination.  U.S. EPA proposes to excavate the contaminated surface soil and dispose of it off site.

After the excavation, the remaining soil on site will meet cleanup level goals for lead and solvents. The site will then be backfilled with clean fill and seeded with grasses.
