Passenger vehicle emissions study begins in Kansas City;

(06/02/04) A consortium of researchers representing the vehicle, engine, and fuel industry, a coalition of state air agencies, and several U.S. government agencies, including the Department of Transportation, the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency will begin a study of passenger vehicle emissions in the Kansas City metropolitan area this summer. The goal of this study is to collect emissions data from motor vehicles. This data will be used to estimate emissions from motor vehicles throughout the country. Kansas City was chosen for this program for a number of factors, including strong local support and fleet characteristics which are representative nationally. The program will recruit from the general public a mixture of cars and light trucks and sample tailpipe emissions both during operation on a treadmill device called a dynamometer and as the vehicle is driven on the road. The on-road sampling will use a portable emissions-measurement system to be installed on the recruited sample of vehicles. The program began vehicle recruitment in May, and the field work is scheduled for completion in winter 2005. The program will measure the emissions of about 500 vehicles.
