EPA AWARDS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GRANT FOR MAUI NON-PROFIT

      SAN FRANCISCO--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has selected Na Moku Apuni O Ko'olau Hui, a non-profit organization in Maui, to receive $49,400 under the agency's Sustainable Development Challenge Grant Program. In cooperation with the University of Hawaii and another local non-profit, Na Moku Apuni O Ko'olau Hui will work with local farmers to combine contemporary and traditional farming methods to produce economically valuable ornamental and edible fish, and escargot using environmentally sound methods. Nutrient-rich effluent from the project will then be used to irrigate traditional taro paddies. The Hawaii project is one of 41 proposals chosen from across the nation by EPA. The Sustainable Development Challenge Grant program provides seed money to encourage creative local approaches to serious environmental problems through sustainable development strategies. The grant program funds grass roots community partnerships among citizens, non-profit organizations, government, and business.  Further information, including descriptions of the 41 new projects, is available at: www.epa.gov/ecocommunity.
