NEW YORK TOUR COMPANY PLEADS GUILTY

New York Apple Tours Inc. (Apple Tours), formerly based in Fort Lee, N.J., pleaded guilty on Sept. 15, to charges that it falsified documents indicating that 70 double decker busses imported from England met federal emissions standards required by the Clean Air Act. In addition, Apple Tours also admitted that it falsified documents which stated the buses met federal safety standards. The buses were used to provide tourists with transportation in the New York City area. The plea agreement calls for Apple Tours to pay a $800,000 fine, bring its buses into compliance with EPA and Department of Transportation standards, and create a trust fund to ensure future compliance. In addition, all persons connected with Apple Tours will be banned for 10 years from submitting compliance certifications for its buses to government officials. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the U.S. Customs Service, and was prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice.
