EPA TO ANNOUNCE MAJOR SUPERFUND SETTLEMENT FOR IRON MOUNTAIN

     First-of-its-kind agreement will clean up one of country's most toxic sites
                                 
     SAN FRANCISCO   U.S. EPA Regional Administrator Felicia Marcus will join California EPA Secretary Winston Hickox and other state and federal officials in Sacramento tomorrow to announce a major, precedent-setting settlement for one of the country's most toxic sites, the Iron Mountain Mine Superfund Site outside of Redding, Calif.

     Among its many distinctions, the Iron Mountain Mine contains the highest acidic levels ever measured on the planet, and at one time discharged roughly equal to one quarter of the total national discharge of copper and zinc to surface waters from industrial and municipal sources

                    WHEN:  10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 19 (To be followed by site tour later that day at the site)

                          Officials from the U.S Department of Justice, U.S. Fish                and Wildlife Service, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration and numerous other state and local agencies.

               WHERE: Governor's Press Conference Room (Room 1190, first floor,     State Capitol)
               
               VISUALS:  Following the news conference, officials will travel to the Iron Mountain Mine to give a site tour and answer questions on the status of the cleanup.

               DIRECTIONS: We plan to meet at the CH2M Hill Office in Redding at 3 p.m., and then we will drive out to the site together (about a half hour away).
                                   
                           To get to CH2MHill, go west on Placer off of Court Street (the main street in Redding).  Off of Placer, take a left on Airpark Drive.  CH2MHill is at 2525 Airpark Drive.
