EPA Proposes Final Cleanup Plan for PECO’s Chester Waterfront Site

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced a proposed remedy to clean up contaminated soil and waste materials at the PECO power station, located on the Delaware River waterfront in Chester, Pa.

“This cleanup will clear the way to transform the waterfront area into a community asset,” said Thomas C. Voltaggio, EPA mid-Atlantic deputy regional administrator.

In consultation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, EPA issued a document describing a final cleanup remedy which will eliminate risks to human health and the environment associated with contaminants at the site.

Since 1993, EPA has been working with PECO and the state to investigate and clean up environmental contamination at PECO’s property along the Delaware River. The document issued today summarizes environmental conditions at the site over the past several years, and describes the steps EPA is proposing to manage the contamination and restore the property.

EPA officials will explain the proposed cleanup to the local community on Tuesday, June 11 at a public meeting scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Life in Christ Cathedral of Faith, 3001 West 10th Street, Chester.
