EPA Settlement for Companies to develop Soil and Waste Design Plan for Central Chemical Superfund Site in Hagerstown, Md.

PHILADELPHIA (Nov. 5, 2013) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced that 16 companies have agreed to develop a detailed design plan for the Superfund cleanup of contaminated soil and waste at the Central Chemical Site on Mitchell Avenue in Hagerstown, Washington Co., Md. at an estimated cost of $250,000.

The companies are: Arkema, Inc.; Bayer Crop Science, LP; E. I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company; FMC Corporation; Honeywell International, Inc.; Lebanon Seaboard Corporation; Montrose Chemical Corporation of California; News Publishing Australia Limited; Occidental Chemical Corporation; Olin Corporation; Rohm and Haas Company; Rhone-Poulenc; Shell Oil Company; Syngenta Crop Protection, LLC; Union Carbide Corporation; and Wilmington Securities, Inc.

This settlement moves the process of cleaning up of the Central Chemical Superfund site another step forward in protecting public health and the environment. It is anticipated that it will take approximately two years to complete the design.

EPA selected a cleanup plan for the contaminated soil and waste portion of the Central Chemical site in 2009 following an extensive investigation, an analysis of six cleanup options, and community involvement. The soil and waste portion is one of the two components of the clean up.
