EPA grant supports W. Va. environmental education

PHILADELPHIA – (November 5, 2007) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $14,924 environmental education grant to the Cacapon Institute in High View, W. Va. to expand a statewide environmental education program.

The Cacapon Institute is a non-profit organization that focuses on using science and education to help citizens protect and enjoy the Cacapon, Potomac and Appalachain watersheds in West Virginia. Part of the funding will be used to support teacher workshops so that teachers can pass on environmental knowledge to students. Funding will also support environmental stream assessment activities for elementary school students.

"By supporting environmental education for teachers, we can help provide students throughout West Virginia important information on the roles they can take to protect our watersheds from environmental dangers," said Donald S. Welsh, administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

Since 1992, EPA has provided almost $3 million annually in environmental education grants to local organizations, schools and government agencies nationwide. This funding supports a wide range of environmental issues for citizens of all ages.
