MINNESOTA MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO POLLUTING IN VIRGINIA

Luke C. Hester 202-564-7818 / hester.luke@epa.gov

J. Gregory Dant of Andover, Minn., a former pollution control operator at Rehrig International, Inc., pleaded guilty on April 2 in Richmond, Va. to violating the Clean Water Act. Dant admitted to tampering with a sampling device which monitored industrial discharges of metal plating wastes, including nickel and chromium, into the Richmond city sewer system. The defendant, who was responsible for collecting and reporting Rehrig’s discharge sampling reports, knowingly used clean tapwater to dilute a sample that was tested by the device. Discharging higher than permitted levels of plating wastes into public sewer systems can damage sewage treatment equipment and can prevent publically-owned sewage treatment systems from properly processing sewage. When sentenced, Dant faces a maximum of up to two years in prison and/or a fine of up to $250,000. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division and the Defense Criminal Investigative Service with the assistance of the FBI, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the Richmond Wastewater Treatment Division and the Chesterfield County Department of Utilities. It is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s office in Richmond.
