CONSENSUS STATEMENT RELEASED FROM INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON AIR POLLUTION TRANSPORT ACROSS NORTH
PACIFIC BORDERS

EPA today released a consensus statement from scientists in the U.S., Russia, China, Japan, Canada and South Korea confronting the problem of long-range transport of air pollutants -- such as smog precursors, sulfur dioxide, DDT, mercury and radionuclides – across international borders in the North Pacific region. Over 100 experts from these countries met in Seattle in July for the First International Conference on Trans-Pacific Transport of Atmospheric Contaminants. To deal with the long-range transport problem, the Conference aimed to identify research needs and promote a network of individuals and organizations. While Conference participants achieved consensus in many key areas, they also recognized important gaps and uncertainties in knowledge, and concluded by calling for cooperative development of a “Pacific Environmental Research Strategy” to promote a common scientific understanding of long-range transport. The consensus statement can be accessed soon at: https://www.epa.gov/oia , then click on “International Environmental Policy Issues,” then “Transboundary Transport-Documents.” For further technical information, phone Marilyn Engle of EPA’s Office of International Activities, or e-mail her at engle.marilyn@epa.gov.
