Administrator Whitman Launches National Initiative to Promote Land Reuse and Redevelopment -- Expanding the Brownfields Program to all Cleanup Programs

On Thursday, April 10, EPA, joined by local and State officials, will unveil its new Land Revitalization Agenda (LRA) to integrate land reuse into all its cleanup programs. Harbor Point is the site for this announcement, because it is considered a model for the LRA and RCRA Correction Action Cleanup Program.

What: At Harbor Point, the former AlliedSignal/Honeywell facility, EPA Administrator Christie Whitman will launch the Land Revitalization Agenda, a national initiative that integrates revitalization and land reuse into the way EPA conducts business in all its cleanup programs.

Why: The Harbor Point site is the location selected for this national announcement because it is considered a model for the RCRA Corrective Action Cleanup Program. Through the collaborative efforts of federal, state, and local governments, Honeywell, redevelopers, and the community, this site has attained cleanup standards that ensure the full protection of public health and the environment as it evolves into a showplace for mixed-use development. The redevelopment master plan with include a major public park and promenade, representing up to $400 million in new investment and accommodating as many as 5,000 permanent and 3,000 temporary construction jobs. It is currently the site for the touring circus of Cirque du Soleil.
