SURVEY COMPLETED OF ENVIRONMENTAL INDUSTRY
CONTRIBUTION TO NATIONAL ECONOMY

A survey of the U.S. environmental technology and services industry highlights efforts of the Clinton Administration to ensure worldwide competititiveness of that industry and domestic environmental protection in a cost-effective manner. The makeup of the industry---its size, scope and composition---and its contribution to the national economy, were evaluated and reported on in a new report, “Survey of Environmental Products and Services,” produced by a collaborative effort of Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration and the Department of Commerce’s Bureau of the Census. The survey is the largest and most comprehensive ever undertaken by government of what is one of the fastest growing and evolving industry sectors worldwide. Almost 10,000 manufacturing, construction and service firms were surveyed. The value of products, revenues for services and receipts for construction projects related to environmental activities was approximately $102.8 billion in 1995. Some 774,000 employees were involved. The survey provides important information, facilitating a better understanding of the scope and composition of this industry. A copy of the report including summary tables of values of shipments, services and construction projects is available in PDF form on the EPA website at: https://www.epa.gov/docs/oppe/eaed/eedhmpg.htm. Users should go to “resources,” then “report inventory” and then “new downloads” where the report is dated 6/10/98.
