EPA proposes cleanup plan for Ohio's Peters Cartridge Superfund site; meeting July 15, 6:30 p.m.

(Chicago - July 10, 2009) U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has proposed a cleanup plan for the Peters Cartridge Factory Superfund site in Kings Mill, Ohio. A comment period runs through Aug. 6. A public meeting to answer questions about the plan will be held Wednesday, July 15, 6:30 p.m., at the Warren County Administration Building, 406 Justice Drive, Lebanon.

The property, at 1415 Grandin Road, was established as a munitions manufacturing facility beginning in 1887. Currently, several small businesses operate on the site. EPA investigations at the property began in 1990.

EPA evaluated four cleanup alternatives and proposes a $5 million plan that includes digging up 32,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil and backfilling with clean material. The contaminated soil would be consolidated on-site and covered to prevent contact by people and wildlife. Cleanup would also include excavation of three shoreline sediment areas and removing debris near discharge pipes along the Little Miami River. The plan would restrict future land use to non-residential uses and limit other activities on the site.
