Fruitland, ID Food Processor Issued Storm Drain Violation

Because of a foul-smelling scum of floating solids in a storm drain flowing to the Snake River, Golden Valley Foods of Fruitland, Idaho, has been issued a notice of violation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that directs the Golden Valley Foods to comply with all state water quality standards.

The notice of violation was announced today by Bub Loiselle, manager of EPA's regional compliance unit in Seattle.

Loiselle said the notice to Golden Valley Foods stems from an inspection performed last March 12 by the Idaho Division of Environmental Quality and EPA.  The inspectors observed a pond of process waste water overflowing into the storm drain connected with the Snake River. The overflow is a discharge that violates the federal Clean Water Act, a statute that makes the discharge of process wastewater to the waters of the U.S. illegal without an approved permit.
