WATER UTILITIES RUN Y2K TESTS

EPA’s Office of Water announced today that 17 drinking water and wastewater utilities across the nation conducted Y2K testing during the period of July 25 through August 6. Control systems, equipment with embedded computer chips, and communications links were among the components tested; in almost all cases, operations continued smoothly. The testing was an effort intended to stimulate and encourage other utilities to conduct Y2K testing and contingency planning exercises, to let local customers know about the Y2K readiness status of their drinking water supplies and wastewater treatment facilities, and to share their lessons learned with other utilities through their associations’ and EPA’s web sites and publications. EPA is preparing a summary of the lessons learned and case studies to share with utilities and other organizations committed to assisting with the process of getting ready for Y2K. A list of the tested facilities and additional information is available at: https://www.epa.gov/year2000 or by calling EPA at 202-260-0173.
