Facilities earn spots in EPA top-performance program

(Dallas, Texas – March 6, 2007) From the food and beverage sector to the aviation industry, seven new facilities spanning Arkansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas have earned spots in the Environmental Protection Agency’s program for top environmental performers.

Members of the National Environmental Performance Track program maintain strong environmental compliance records and then go beyond regulatory requirements to create superior environmental management programs.

The newest Performance Track members from EPA’s south central region are: Aloe Vera of America, Inc., Dallas, Texas; Bandelier Trading Company, Los Alamos, New Mexico; Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport; Frito-Lay Inc., Jonesboro, Arkansas; Toshiba International Corp., Houston, Texas; University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas; and U.S. FAA Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

“These facilities join 48 other new partners on the national Performance Track who are leading the way when it comes to environmental stewardship,” said EPA Regional Administrator Richard E. Greene. “We are pleased to see these facilities making green strategies part of their corporate strategies and hope many others will be inspired to follow their example.”

Performance Track facilities that set three-year goals for continuous improvements in environmental performance beyond their legal requirements, have internal systems in place to manage their environmental impacts, engage in local outreach about their performance and publicly report results. The program’s members come from a wide range of industries, such as automotive, paper, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, and government agencies.

Since the program's inception in 2000, Performance Track membership has grown to 470 members in 46 states and Puerto Rico, and those members have made 1,500 commitments to benefit the environment in both regulated and unregulated areas. To date, Performance Track members have collectively reduced their water use by 3.5 billion gallons, reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by 88,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, and conserved more than 14,000 acres of land while helping to protect their local and national environment.
