EPA to hold public availability on Dover Gas Light Superfund Site

PHILADELPHIA (February 26, 2008) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public availability session Thursday, Feb. 28 to update Dover residents on its investigations at the Dover Gas Light Superfund Site.

The public availability session will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Delaware Natural Resources and Environmental Control headquarters, Richardson and Robbins Building, (first floor), 89 Kings Highway, Dover.

EPA officials will be available to explain and answer questions about new testing procedures that will begin this spring at the site to determine if there is a potential that harmful gases could be released from below ground into the air through a process known as vapor intrusion.

Vapor intrusion is the migration of gaseous chemicals from underground into overlying buildings. Some chemicals in contaminated groundwater and soil, when not far below ground surface, may migrate through soils as vapors that move into indoor air spaces of buildings above. When that happens, persons in the buildings may be exposed to them. Although there is no evidence of vapor intrusion at the site, EPA testing has identified harmful contaminants in the groundwater.
