EPA Selects Environmental Achievement Award Winners - Two Awardees from Delaware

PHILADELPHIA (September 16, 2009) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s mid-Atlantic region today announced 10 winners of its second annual environmental achievement awards including two from Delaware – a state employee who worked on a promising environmental project and a major corporation that has established itself as a strong steward of the environment.

“People and organizations throughout our region are making great strides in environmental protection, and these awards recognize some of the shining stars who are doing more than their share to keep our planet healthy and inspiring others to do the same,” said acting EPA Regional Administrator William C. Early.

The Mid-Atlantic Environmental Achievement Awards recognize groups, agencies, individuals and businesses making extraordinary contributions to improving the environment in the mid-Atlantic region, which includes Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. The winning entries were selected from among more than 60 nominations. The Delaware award winners include:

Amy Jacobs from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control for her work in establishing the agency’s Wetland Monitoring and Assessment Program. She has strengthened the network of individuals and groups that are working to protect wetlands throughout Delaware by providing scientifically valid data and opening avenues for better communication to improve restoration and protection of wetlands.

AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals for its commitment to energy conservation, waste reduction, pollution prevention, and environmentally-conscious travel. The company understands that green makes a great workplace, and motivates employees to support environmental improvement efforts at work and at home. Achievements include attaining Energy Star certification of certain buildings, replacing fleet vehicles with hybrids, reducing hazardous waste and its employees’ enthusiastic embrace of the EPA Change a Light/Change the World energy conservation campaign.
