SAN FRANCISCO -- Local, state and federal agencies will hold a Border XXI open house in San Diego on binational environmental enforcement and hazardous waste management issues along the U.S./Mexico border.  Agency staff from two Border XXI workgroups will be on hand to answer questions from the public and provide information on their  roles and responsibilities.

The open house will be held Wednesday, March 8, 2000, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the Holiday Inn On the Bay, 1355 N. Harbor Dr., San Diego, Calif.  Residents and community representatives are invited to ask questions about the activities of the workgroups and also provide any relevant information that they may have about environmental enforcement on the border, including information about violations of law.

Border XXI is an innovative binational effort which brings together the diverse U.S. and Mexican federal agencies responsible for the shared border regions to work cooperatively to protect human health and environment on the border.  Border XXI is composed of nine workgroups, two of which are the Hazardous and Solid Waste Workgroup and the Cooperative Enforcement and  Compliance Workgroup.

Agencies represented on the workgroup include the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the California Environmental Protection Agency and its Departments of Toxic Substance Control and Pesticide Regulation, the San Diego City Attorney's Office, the San Diego Department of Environmental Health and the U.S. Customs.

Parking in the hotel is $5 with validation, but street parking is free and generally available in the evening.  Contact U.S. EPA's Dave Fege at (619) 235-4769 or Chris Reiner at (415) 744-2096 for more information about the open house.
