Atlanta- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will host a public meeting for the general public on Monday, August 25, 2014 at Williston Town Hall on Main Street in Williston, SC beginning at 7:00 p.m. to discuss the status of the Admiral Home Appliances site and current cleanup at the former Imhoff wetland area.

The site cleanup is underway and will begin mid- July and be completed by October. The contaminated soil will be excavated from an area about one and a half acres in size. The excavation will be about one foot deep. The excavated soil will be loaded into trucks and taken to a permitted landfill for disposal. The excavated area will be backfilled and restored with wetland plants. The cleanup is necessary to provide long term protection of the environment.

The Cleanup will be performed by Rheem Manufacturing Company, a former site owner. EPA and South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control will provide oversight. Another former sight owner, Whirlpool, will continue a pilot test to treat solvents in groundwater near the plant building at the site. The groundwater treatment method is called enhanced reductive dechlorination. This method involves injecting a liquid carbohydrate into groundwater which provides food and other additives that will help existing bacteria break down solvents.

All cleanup actions are related to prior operations at the site and are not related to the current business.
