EPA FINES CHEVRON $65,000 FOR POLLUTING WATER AT HONOLULU HARBOR

     SAN FRANCISCO -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today it has reached a $65,000 settlement with Chevron U.S.A., Inc. for alleged violations of the Clean Water Act at its Honolulu Harbor terminal in the summer of 2000.

     The jet fuel pipeline spill, approximately 35 barrels or 1478 gallons, occurred between June 8 and July 21, 2000 at Chevron's terminal facility, approximately 150 feet from the Honolulu Harbor.

     "Facilities have an obligation to prevent spills and be in compliance with environmental laws," said Jane Diamond, the EPA's acting Superfund division director for the Pacific Southwest.  "We are pleased that Chevron agreed to amicably resolve this matter," she said.

     The EPA has been working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Hawai'i Department of Health to compel clean up of contamination in Honolulu Harbor.
