BOSTON -- The New England regional office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is seeking nominations for its annual Merit Awards program which recognizes environmental achievement by individuals, businesses, organizations, state and local governments, and media in the region.

The awards have been given annually since the agency was created in 1970. Past recipients have included scientists, journalists, business representatives, public officials, and other individuals committed to preserving the environment.

"We are pleased to recognize those who have demonstrated a strong commitment to our common goal of protecting the public health and environment of New England," said Regional Administrator John DeVillars. "Their accomplishments serve as an inspiration to all of us."

An independent EPA panel will select the winners from among those nominated based on the following criteria: promotion of innovative ideas, techniques and/or technologies; ability to address an environmental problem or need; accomplishment of stated goals; ability of the program to be replicated or widely shared; collaboration with others; clarity and effectiveness of the presentation; and long term effects on the environment.

Deadline for nominations is February 28. For nomination forms or for more information write to EPA - New England, JFK Federal Bldg. (REA), Boston, MA. 02203, or call Kathleen Bogie at (617)918-1976.
