CHICAGO MAN SENTENCED IN ASBESTOS CASE

Bogdan R. Mucha was sentenced on March 14, in U.S. District Court in Chicago, Ill., on one count of mail fraud for selling false asbestos removal accreditation certificates to an EPA special agent during a sting operation. Mucha owned and operated the Midwest Institute of Asbestos in Chicago, Ill. Mucha used the U.S. mail to sell certificates to the agent who had not received asbestos abatement training from the Institute. Mucha was sentenced to one year of probation with one month of community confinement and a $4,800 fine for his felony conviction. Mucha must also reimburse the government for $1,200 in "buy money" used in the investigation. The case was investigated by EPA's Criminal Investigation Division and the FBI.
