Atlanta, Georgia - November 17, 2004) - Today the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized Food Lion in Salisbury, North Carolina and Parkway Properties in Jackson, Mississippi as two of the 2004 ENERGY STAR Leaders for demonstrating superior energy management and environmental leadership.

The groups recognized today have established a portfolio-wide energy efficiency baseline, a critical step in successful energy management.  Parkway Properties is a commercial real estate entity with 62 properties located in 11 states.  Parkway Properties has taken the first step toward improving its energy efficiency by entering its baseline energy data and is poised to realize significant energy savings in the future.  Food Lion, with 1,200 grocery stores in 11 states, has earned recognition for achieving an energy rating of 75 or better for its entire building portfolio.  This significant achievement demonstrates Food Lion’s commitment to superior energy performance.  By managing their energy well, ENERGY STAR Leaders are showing leadership, improving their financial performance, and helping to protect the environment.

ENERGY STAR partners who demonstrate continuous improvement in energy efficiency – not just in individual buildings, but organization-wide – qualify for EPA’s new ENERGY STAR Leaders recognition.  EPA designates ENERGY STAR Leaders based on an organization’s actual energy efficiency, as measured using EPA’s energy performance rating system.  The rating system provides an objective, standardized approach for measuring the efficiency of an entire building, or building portfolio, on a 100 point scale.  Over 19,000 buildings across the country have used the rating system to help manage their energy use and reduce costs.

EPA introduced ENERGY STAR in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce air pollution through increased energy efficiency.  Today, ENERGY STAR offers businesses and consumers energy efficient solutions to save energy, money and help protect the environment for future generations. More than 8,000 organizations have become ENERGY STAR partners and are committed to improving the energy efficiency of businesses, products, and homes.  For more information and a complete list of 2004 Energy Star Leaders, please visit http://www.energystar.gov or call toll-free 1-888-STAR-YES.
