EPA REVOKES OLD SMOG STANDARD FOR 2,901 COUNTIES
In a procedural step in the implementation process of the new, more protective health standard for reducing ground-level ozone (smog), EPA has revoked the old national ambient air quality standard for ozone in 2,901 counties in the United States. Basing its decision on the latest air quality data, EPA has determined that these counties have no violations of the old ozone standard. The vast majority of these counties should need no additional local controls to meet the new ozone standard. This action follows the Administration’s Implementation Plan, which was issued when the new health standards were announced last year. Today’s final action will appear soon in the Federal Register, but can be read immediately, along with the county revocation lists, maps and other supporting materials, on the Internet at: https://www.epa.gov/oar/oaqps/greenbk/ozone1hr/may98/.
