U.S. EPA TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING ON WASTE DISPOSAL SUPERFUND SITE

  (San Francisco)--  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(U.S. EPA) today announced that it will hold a workshop on
February 15, 1995, to share information about the design for the
cleanup for the Waste Disposal Inc. (WDI) Superfund site in Santa
Fe Springs, Calif., and to receive public comments.

     The workshop will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Santa
Fe Springs Library, 11710 Telegraph Road.  The U.S. EPA is
encouraging the public to participate in developing plans so that
the final design will incorporate community concerns.  This
workshop is the first in a series of meetings that U.S. EPA will
hold to finalize a cleanup design.

    U.S. EPA will be discussing details of its cleanup plans,
which were presented to the public and approved in December 1993.
The plan calls for excavating contaminated soil at some
undeveloped areas of the site and consolidating the soil in an
area that includes a 42-million gallon concrete-lined container
previously used for industrial waste disposal.  The area will
also be capped and landfill gases will be vented and treated, if
necessary.

     After U.S. EPA reviews and approves the design plan,
construction is scheduled to begin in 1996.  Estimated cost is
approximately $5 million and is expected to be funded by the
responsible parties.  
   
    The 43-acre WDI site is a former landfill that accepted
waste from oil well drilling, oil refining and other industrial
operations from the late 1920s until 1964.  The site includes the
concrete-lined container and several unlined pits where waste was
also dumped.  The soil is contaminated with arsenic,
polychlorinated byphenyls (PCBs), lead, pesticides, benzo-(a)-
pyrene and benzene.
