Jane Saginaw, EPA Regional Administrator for Region 6, has announced she will leave EPA effective June 13. As Regional Administrator, she directed the Federal environmental programs for Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.

In announcing her plans, Ms. Saginaw said, "Over the last years, my primary goal has been to raise public awareness of the unique environmental problems facing this region with its enormous industrial base and growing population. Environmental protection and economic expansion must go hand in hand to assure that our children's future is secure."

President Clinton appointed Ms. Saginaw as Regional Administrator on December 2, 1993. Under her leadership, the Regional Office in Dallas has become a nationwide model for excellence in providing outstanding customer service. Also during her tenure, EPA's Region 6 established an office for Water Quality Protection in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as well as an office in El Paso, Texas, to serve the U.S.-Mexico border area where EPA's presence has increased dramatically in recent years. Ms. Saginaw consistently gave strong leadership to EPA's efforts to work in partnership with local communities in solving their environmental problems. An outstanding example was EPA's success in working with the local government and community in Henryetta, Oklahoma, to resolve the problems caused by lead contamination there.

This summer, Ms. Saginaw's time will be devoted to her family. She is married and the mother of pre-school twins, a boy and a girl, and a two-year old daughter. In the fall, she plans to rejoin the Dallas law firm of Baron & Budd, where she had 12 years experience and was a partner specializing in litigation and appellate practice before joining EPA.

Ms. Saginaw is a staunch advocate for environmental education, based on her life-long love for the environment and experience forming a high school ecology club. She is convinced these youthful experiences led her to pursue an environmental career.

Jerry Clifford, Deputy Regional Administrator, will serve as the Acting Regional Administrator until a permanent Regional Administrator is selected.
