BUILDING THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY OF THE FUTURE:
SIXTH ANNUAL STAR FELLOWSHIP CONFERENCE

Chris Paulitz 202-564-9556 / paulitz.chris@epa.gov

A national conference to showcase the research accomplished by graduate fellows in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Science to Achieve Results (STAR) and Minority Academic Institutions (MAI) programs will be held in Silver Spring, Md., on July 16 and 17. The conference provides a unique forum to highlight the research of more than 230 STAR and MAI graduate fellows from universities around the U.S. Several fellows will present research in areas including: Watersheds to Landscapes, Genetic Approaches to Biodiversity, Environmental Toxicology, and Social Sciences. A poster session will display results and conclusions from more than 170 scientific projects. The STAR fellowship program was established by the EPA in 1995 to encourage promising students to obtain advanced degrees and pursue careers in environmentally related fields. The MAI program was initiated in response to Executive Order 12320 to strengthen the capacity, and increase research support, for eligible minority institutions and provide fellowships for students attending those institutions. The program consists of students attending Historically Black Colleges, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and Tribal Colleges. Sessions are open to the general public. Information about the agenda and registration is available at: http://es.epa.gov/ncer/forum/draft_agenda2001.html or by contacting Estella Waldman at (202) 564-6836 or waldman.estella@epa.gov.
