FOR RELEASE: THURSDAY, DEC. 16, 1999
EPA, STATE OF OREGON APPROVE ENVIRONMENTAL
BLUEPRINT FOR TILLAMOOK BAY

On Dec. 14, EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner approved a blueprint for restoring and maintaining the environmental health of Tillamook Bay. Forwarded to EPA by the Governor of Oregon, the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) was the product of a collaborative process involving stakeholders from state and federal agencies, local governments, industry, business, environmental organizations and citizens. The plan identifies over 60 actions to address environmental problems facing the bay such as bacterial contamination that causes shellfish bed closures, excessive sedimentation that adversely affects fish and wildlife habitat, declining salmon and trout runs due to degradation of spawning and rearing habitat, and flooding which modifies the hydrology of the bay, impacts aquatic habitats and damages property. Implementing the recommended actions will require a strong partnership of various federal and state agencies, including EPA and the state of Oregon, local government and other bay users. The National Estuary Program (NEP) serves to assist communities in restoring the health of their estuaries while supporting economic and recreational activities. Tillamook Bay is one of 28 estuaries in the NEP, and this is the twenty-first CCMP to be approved. Additional information is available from EPA’s estuary web site at: https://www.epa.gov/owow, or by calling Nancy Laurson, at 202-260-1698 or John Gabrielson at 206-553-4183.
