EPA Awards $5,000 Grant for Environmental Training for D.C. Teachers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Community Alliance for Youth Action (CAYA) has received a $5,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to train Washington, D.C. teachers in new methods to teach environmental education that focus on community needs.

CAYA promotes community-based educational programs that empower young people to work for positive change in their personal lives, schools and communities. The training program, which is expected to reach about 500 teachers, will educate teachers about local environmental issues and emphasize how teachers can present these issues in their classrooms.

“Through this type of program we can reach out to teachers who can in turn reach out to youngsters throughout Washington, D.C. This project can open many opportunities for young children to learn about their surrounding environment,” said Bradley Campbell, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental education. Nationally, EPA awarded more than $2.3 million in environmental education grants in 2000 to schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations.
