EPA OFFERS MONEY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROJECTS

     SAN FRANCISCO -- The U.S.  Environmental Protection Agency called today for educators in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, and U.S. aligned Pacific island groups to put together proposals for environmental education grant projects for the year 2000.

     The EPA funds environmental education projects that focus on improving teaching skills for educators, typically through workshops; educating teachers, students, or the public about human health problems stemming from environmental pollution; building state, local, or tribal capability to develop and deliver environmental education programs; or promoting environmental careers among students.
                     
     Projects are also encouraged that educate members of a community through a community- based organization, or educate the general public through print, film, broadcast, or other media to be more environmentally conscious and make environmentally responsible decisions.

     In 1999, the EPA awarded $160,000 to 19 Region 9 applicants who requested grant monies ranging from $2,550 to $25,000. Most grants were for $5,000.
                     
     Schools, universities, non-profit organizations, and non-federal government agencies that seek to further environmental education programs should apply for an EPA grant by obtaining a copy of the Sept. 22 Federal Register at your local library, by contacting Matt Gaffney at (415) 744-1166, or by sending an e-mail with your mailing address to: "gaffney.matthew@epa.gov".
