THREE MEN SENTENCED FOR DUMPING IN MISSISSIPPI RIVER

William Ries and John Hirsch of Dubuque, Iowa, and Michael Sandidge of St. Paul, Minn., were each sentenced on March 21, in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to 30 days confinement with work release privileges, one year supervised release and a fine of $1,000 plus interest for their guilty pleas to one count of violating the Rivers and Harbors Act. In their pleas, the defendants admitted to knowingly participating in the dumping of refuse including coal, fertilizer, salt and grain into the Mississippi River without a discharge permit.
