EPA AND ENVIROSMART PRODUCTS COMPANY SIGN AGREEMENT
TO DEVELOP SAFER DETERGENTS AND CLEANERS

EPA signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with EnviroSmart Products Company, Chicago, Il., to promote a laundry detergent that minimizes environmental impacts for light institutional and household uses. Under this MOU, EPA will provide technical advice and support to achieve continuous improvement in EnviroSmart’s "Ultra LLD" detergent product. EnviroSmart has agreed to formulate the product based on cleaning agents that quickly biodegrade into non-polluting byproducts. Ultra LLD contains a mild, biodegradable solvent
and fabric softener, and ingredients that do not deplete the oxygen of surface waters. Under the formulator right-to-know provision, EnviroSmart will seek test data from its chemical suppliers and encourage them to test when data is lacking. The voluntary agreement was established under EPA’s Design for the Environment (DfE) program. EPA’s DfE program engages several industry sectors, including institutional and industrial laundries, automotive refinishing, garment care, electronics, and printing. For more information on the DfE programs, contact
