EPA Invites Public To Meeting On Ten-Mile Drain Site

Chicago (Aug. 23, 2010) --- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 will hold an open house followed by a public meeting Thursday, Aug. 26, to update the community on the ongoing investigation and provide details about the next phase of work at the Ten-Mile Drain site in St. Clair Shores, Mich.

At the open house, 1 to 4 p.m., Aug. 26, at the St. Clair Shores Public Library, 22500 E. 11 Mile Road, St. Clair Shores, residents will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with local, state and federal environmental and health officials. There will be no formal presentation at the open house.

The public meeting will begin at 7 p.m., Aug. 26, at Lakeview High School, 21100 E. 11 Mile Road. The meeting will be in the R.H. Schaublin Auditorium. After a brief presentation, officials will be available for questions.

The Ten-Mile Drain Site has been proposed for placement on the Superfund National Priorities List. A decision on the status of the site is expected in September. The purpose of the public meeting is to introduce the team working on the project and explain the Superfund cleanup process and investigation. EPA encourages community input as Ten-Mile Drain moves into the long-term cleanup phase.

Soil and sediment in and around a storm sewer system in St. Clair Shores are contaminated with PCBs. PCBs also are in canals where the storm sewer discharges into Lake St. Clair. EPA and other agencies have been involved in several removal projects at the Ten-Mile Drain site since PCBs were discovered in 2002. However the area has been re-contaminated and the source of the contamination has not been found.
