Oakland Resident Chosen EPA Inspector of the Year

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded Larry Morgan, of Oakland, Maryland the first ever Inspector of the Year Award for his work as an underground tank inspector.

“Larry Morgan’s work at Maryland’s Department of the Environment has had
a direct effect on protecting Maryland’s land and water resources. His commitment to environmental protection serves as an example to all of us,”said Thomas C. Voltaggio, acting regional administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Morgan was chosen from candidates throughout state environmental agencies in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. He was nominated by his peers.

Morgan is a skilled inspector with 14 years of experience inspecting facilities throughout western Maryland. He was the first Maryland state environmental inspector to get 100 per cent compliance with the 1998 upgrades for underground storage tanks – removing significant threats to groundwater from leaking tanks. Morgan also helps companies understand the laws about underground storage tanks and surface mining activities.

With millions of gallons of fuel stored in underground tanks throughout the U.S., underground tank leaks pose a constant threat to land and water resources. The leak prevention regulations are designed to reduce the serious health and environmental risks of oil and petroleum product leaks and spills. Inspectors help to ensure that facilities are following these laws.
