PA EPA RECOGNIZES WINNERS OF GREEN CHEMISTRY CHALLENGE

FOR RELEASE: WEDNESDAY, JULY 3, 1996

EPA RECOGNIZES WINNERS OF
GREEN CHEMISTRY CHALLENGE

EPA will next week recognize five organizations for their accomplishments in "green chemistry." The Green Chemistry Challenge was announced in March 1995 by President Clinton and Vice President Gore as part of the Administration's Reinventing Environmental Regulations initiative to promote pollution prevention and industrial ecology. The program was established to recognize and promote fundamental and innovative chemical technologies that accomplish pollution prevention through source reduction and have broad applicability in industry. EPA, working together with partners from industry, the states and other agencies of the federal government, solicited nominations for Green Chemistry Challenge awards in October. More than 70 nominations were reviewed by a technical panel selected by the American Chemical Society. The recognition ceremony will be held on July 11 at the National Academy of Sciences. Representatives from the chemical industry, trade associations, scientific organizations and academia will participate in the ceremony. For more information on the Green Chemistry Challenge, call EPA's Paul Anastas at 202-260-2659.
