PA REPORT ON U.S. GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1994

EPA RELEASES REPORT ON U.S. GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

EPA today released its official inventory of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 - 93. The emissions estimates contained in this report, along with future updates, will be used to track U.S. progress in meeting President Clinton's commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by the year 2000. This is the first greenhouse gas emissions report required of the United States under its responsibilities as a Party to the Framework Convention on Climate Change, which was set up in April 1992 by the Rio Treaty (Earth Summit). So far, 166 countries have signed the treaty and 93 have ratified it. Under the Framework, the United States and 17 other developed countries had to submit similar greenhouse gas emissions initial reports to the Secretariat of the Convention by September 1994; developing countries must submit their initial emission reports by March 1997. The dates of future updates to these initial reports remain to be negotiated. For copies of the document, titled "Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1990 - 1993" (EPA 230-R-94-014, September 1994), fax a request to the National Center for Environmental Publications and Information (NCEPI) at 513-891-6685, or write to the following address: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Center for Environmental Publications and Information (NCEPI), P.O.
