EPA Seeks Public Comments On Cleanup Plan For Contamination At Superfund Site in Delaware County, New York

(#98073) NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ihas proposed a clean up plan for chemical contamination at the York Oil federal Superfund site, a former waste oil recycling and storage facility, in Moira, New York and is seeking public comment on the plan. The public comment period starts today and extends to July 23, 1998.

EPA has scheduled a public meeting on July 16, starting at 7:00 P.M. at the Moira Town Hall on North Lawrence Road to discuss the findings of an investigation into the extent of contamination in soils, sediments and groundwater at the site, the options identified as possible solutions to the problem and the actions EPA is proposing as the best method to address the contamination. The investigation and studies were conducted, with EPA supervision, by some of the parties deemed responsbile for causing the problem. EPA's proposed plan to deal with the contaminated sediments at the site involves excavation and dredging, followed by on-site treatment and disposal. The Agency will also be recommending that natural attenuation (breakdown of contaminants) of the groundwater in the affected area be relied upon to return the groundwater quality to acceptable levels over time, with long-term monitoring to measure the improvement. The proposal also calls for institutional controls on the use of the on-site groundwater, specifically, a prohibtion on the installation of drinking water wells.
