EPA TO BEGIN ENVIRONMENTAL INVESTIGATION IN RICHTON, PERRY COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that it initiated an environmental investigation (EI) in Richton, Perry County, Mississippi in response to environmental justice concerns from the McSwain Community.

The investigation began February 12, 2001 and is expected to end on February 16, 2001. The first phase of the EI will focus on sample collection. Samples will be collected from three municipal drinking water wells, nine private wells, one wastewater treatment plant, and two ditches. Information obtained will be used to determine the direction for the next sampling phase. A final report will be available in June 2001.
