DETROIT METAL STRIPPER INDICTED FOR VIOLATING
THE CLEAN WATER ACT AND RCRA

Edward J. Pedalino, President and owner of Chem Strip Inc., a Detroit metal stripping business, was indicted on June 11, in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan in Detroit for violating the Clean Water Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. The indictment alleges that the defendant discharged highly caustic and acidic wastes into the Detroit sewer system while claiming that he was only discharging rinse water. In addition, Pedalino is charged with storing hazardous wastes without a permit. The discharge of highly caustic and acidic liquids into public sewers can disrupt the treatment of wastes at sewage treatment facilities by destroying beneficial bacteria and can cause significant and costly damage to equipment. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the FBI and the Detroit Water and Sewer Department with the assistance of EPA’s National Enforcement Investigations Center .
