MISSOURI COMPANY PLEADS GUILTY IN HAZARDOUS WASTE CASE

Essex Waste Management in Kingsville, Mo., pleaded guilty on Jan. 22, in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri in Kansas City to violating the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Essex admitted that it illegally stored aerosol cans which contained ignitable hazardous waste. In July 1996, the stored cans exploded due to a buildup of vapors, causing a fire at the Essex facility. When sentenced, Essex faces a maximum fine of up to $500,000 and up to five years probation. The case was investigated by the EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, the FBI and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, and was prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice.
