MEDIA ADVISORY
U.S. EPA ADMINISTRATOR BROWNER TO HOST ENVIRONMENT LEADERS' SUMMIT; CHILDREN'S HEALTH TOPS AGENDA

U.S. EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner will host environmental leaders from around the world at the 1997 "Environment Leaders' Summit of the Eight" in Miami, Fla., on May 5-6 to discuss important environmental and public health issues. The meeting -- the first ever hosted in the United States-- will include environmental leaders from the Group of Seven nations -- Canada, France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States -- and officials from Russia and the European Union.
The summit will focus on actions to achieve broader cooperation to protect the health of children from environmental hazards in the United States and around the world. The health effects and other impacts of climate change, international efforts on environmental enforcement and compliance, and the upcoming United Nations special session on progress since the Rio Earth Summit are also on the agenda.

Browner will lead the environmental leaders in discussions of critical environmental health issues facing children around the world, including: protecting children from dangerous exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, setting protective standards and conducting risk assessments that take into account children's unique susceptibility to environmental health hazards; achieving safe drinking water; improving research on endocrine-disrupting chemicals; and further reducing children's exposure to lead.

The Summit is the key forum for discussing global environmental issues prior to a meeting in Denver hosted by President Clinton with heads of state from the G-7 nations and Russia.
