AMERICA RECYCLES DAY

     Events scheduled throughout the weekend

     SAN FRANCISCO -- The EPA is helping promote several California events and activities in support of America Recycles Day, an annual event promoting recycling and the purchase of recycled content products.  

     The National Recycling Economic Information Study, conducted for EPA's Office of Solid Waste and the National Recycling Coalition, provides definitive evidence of recycling's contributions to the national economy. The study found that the recycling industry employs 1.1 million people nationwide, generating an annual payroll of $37 billion and grossing $236 billion in annual sales. Californians held 62,657 recycling related jobs to generate $12.3 billion in annual sales. The national economic impact is comparable to the size of the auto and truck manufacturing industry and is significantly larger than either the mining or waste management/disposal industries.

     This is the fifth year the EPA has co-sponsored the event with corporate sponsors.  Events are coordinated in each state and are held during November.

     The following events are scheduled Friday and Saturday in California:

UNION CITY 10:30 a.m. Fri. Nov. 16 - The Union City Glass Processing Facility will hold a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony of the second largest glass processor in the United States. RIVERSIDE 9:00-1:00 Sat. Nov 17 - Local green waste recyclers for Riverside County will give away bulk compost and mulch materials. PALO ALTO 11:00-3:30 Sat. Nov. 17 at The Albert Schultz Jewish Community Center 655 Arastradero Road-
Old athletic shoes will be collected and sent to Nike where they will be ground into three types of material: rubber from the outsole, foam from the midsole and fabric from the shoe's upper.  The ground materials are then recycled into sports court padding and flooring, and playground surfaces. Sponsored by the Recycling Program and Palo Alto Sanitation Company.

MARYSVILLE 11:00-3:00 Sat. Nov. 17 3001 North Levee Road - Integrated Waste Recovery Facility open house where visitors can see the sorting line and where it all goes. Local non-profit groups can redeem aluminum cans for 1.10 a pound and # 1 C.R.V. plastic containers for 50 cents a pound.

PASADENA 11:00-3:00 Sat. Nov 17 - The Arroyo Seco festival will feature a recycled materials fashion show. The festival offers tree planting demonstrations, seedling giveaways, gardening talks, compost samples, prizes for recycling bottles and cans and a workshop on used oil recycling.  A Native American storyteller and children's crafts. City of Pasadena departments will be available to answer questions and distribute and energy-saving materials.
