PORTLAND - Excavation work at an alleged chemical burial site at the BLM “Millpond” campground near Glide, Oregon, yielded one drum containing approximately 15 gallons of a water/diesel fuel/suspected pesticide mixture. The suspected pesticide chemical found in the mixture is called ortho-dichlorobenzene.

After receiving a report of illegal chemical dumping at the campground, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, BLM, and Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) dispatched a team of investigators to the site on July 17-18, 2001.

Based on the results of samples taken during the removal action, it was determined that the site itself and the mixture found posed no immediate threat to the health or safety of the public or the environment. A licensed contractor removed the buried material.
Circumstances surrounding the dumping are still under investigation.
