MEDIA ADVISORY: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency To Announce $4 Million For Brownfields

(CHICAGO – Oct. 15, 2010) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will announce Friday it is awarding $4 million in assistance to 23 communities - including Cleveland, Ohio - to develop area-wide plans for the reuse of brownfields properties.

Mathy Stanislaus, EPA Assistant Administrator for the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response, will announce the grants at an event in Cleveland, along with Shaun Donovan, Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

This new pilot program will help facilitate community involvement in developing plans for brownfields-impacted areas. These pilot projects are being done through the Partnership for Sustainable Communities, which brings EPA, HUD and the Department of Transportation together to coordinate federal actions on housing, transportation and environmental protection. Brownfields are properties where the presence or potential presence of hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants may complicate expansion, redevelopment or reuse.
