The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 4 announced today its new Environmental Merit Awards Program. The program seeks to recognize the creative and productive activities of those outside of EPA in the Southeast who are working in their communities to sustain our natural systems and promote environmental stewardship. The program will give the Agency the opportunity, as a region, to reach out to individuals, states, Federal partners, local governments, stakeholder groups, businesses and others who have made specific contributions in 1999-2000 to improve our environment.

The Agency seeks nominations of individuals or groups who, through extra-special efforts, go above and beyond the call of duty to identify an environmental problem or need and then work to address it by utilizing innovative techniques and/or successful collaborations with others. Additionally, through this effort, EPA wants to recognize students, businesses and teachers who have demonstrated a commitment to preserving and protecting our environmental resources.

Nominees must be a resident, business, governmental or not-for-profit organization located Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, or Tennessee.

The deadline for submitting nominations is August 15, 2000. A panel of EPA Region 4 employees will review the nominations and select the finalists. Winners will be selected in September and presented with their awards at a ceremony in Atlanta in October.

EPA Region 4 has initiated a regional mass-mailing of the awards program announcement brochure and nomination form.
