(#99088) New York, N.Y. -- Three workshops will be held in Connecticut and New York in June to give the public a chance to comment on plans by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to designate dredged material disposal sites in Long Island Sound. The forums, allowing public comment on a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS), are being sponsored jointly by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The sessions will be held from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. on the dates listed below. Registration at each location will begin at 6:00 p.m.

June 15 Stony Brook Union Auditorium, New York State University,
100 Nicolls Road, Stony Brook, New York
June 16 Main Function Room, Groton Inn & Suites,
98 Goldstar Highway, Route 184, Groton, Connecticut
June 23 Commodore Vanderbilt Room, Westin Stamford Hotel,
One First Stamford Place, Stamford, Connecticut

"The workshops will provide the public a chance to assist in identifying issues which should be addressed in the environmental documentation needed to evaluate if and/or how many disposal sites should be designated within the sound," said Larry Rosenberg, Chief of Public Affairs for the Corps of Engineers.

Sites historically used to receive dredged material are known as Western Long Island Sound, Central Long Island Sound, Cornfield Shoals and New London disposal sites. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement will cover a wide range of options, including no designation of any sites, designation of one or more of the existing sites, designation of alternative open water sites, and identification of other disposal and/or management options, both in and out of the water.

Following the scoping workshops, the Corps of Engineers and EPA will work cooperatively towards completing a Draft Environmental Impact Statement in the Fall of 2001. Public hearings will be conducted in conjunction with the publication of the draft, and a final EIS will be released in the Spring of 2002.
