EPA to Run Dye Tests at Moyers Landfill

PHILADELPHIA -- Starting Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will run dye tests to determine the effectiveness of the protective cap over the Moyers Landfill hazardous waste site in Montgomery County. The tests will last two days, and the non-toxic green dye may be visible in Skippack Creek.

The 44-acre Moyers Landfill, located in Eagleville, Pa., accepted municipal, industrial and sewage waste from 1940 to 1981. In 1983, Moyers was placed on the National Priorities List, a list of the nation’s worst hazardous waste sites.

After a site investigation and feasibility study, EPA selected a remedy for cleanup. The remedy included erosion controls, a cap, a gas venting system and a leachate control system. The cap construction was completed in 1994, and the other systems were completed in 1997. The cap prevents precipitation from trickling down through the soil, drawing contaminants into the groundwater.

The dye tests are designed to ensure the effectiveness of EPA’s remedy and protection of public health and the environment.
