DISMANTLEMENT COMPLETED ON CONTAMINATED BUILDING IN KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI

The dismantlement of the contaminated seven-story PCB Treatment Inc. (PTI) building at 2100 Wyandotte Street in Kansas City, Mo., has been completed and the final inspections have been approved.

The cleanup was performed by a steering committee representing former PTI customers. Under the Superfund law, those parties deemed responsible for the site contamination are required to perform the cleanup. EPA and state agencies provided oversight for the cleanup of the building.

Debris from the building was removed from the top floor down through interior shafts. Dust suppression and air monitoring during all phases of dismantlement and loading kept any potentially-contaminated dust from being released from the property. Contaminated debris was transported in covered trucks to a landfill in Oklahoma. The non-contaminated debris was also loaded into covered trucks for disposal at the Courtney Ridge Landfill in Sugar Creek, Mo.

The dismantlement was completed ahead of schedule, under budget, and without any accidents. The site, located in the Freighthouse District, is now ready for redevelopment.
